Miles below the surface of Cybertron, past even the ancient Vector Sigma Chamber, lies the fossil cave. The last remnant of Cybertron's original, organic, ecosystem, the cave contains the fossilized remains of animals that once roamed the surface of ancient Cybertron, long before the rise of the Transformers that would ultimately drive them extinct.

Fiction

Beast Machines cartoon

While fleeing Megatron's conquest of Cybertron, the young Maximal Nightscream fled underground. Disoriented, he wandered into the cave. His internal DNA scanners found DNA within a nearby fossil, and reformatted Nightscream into a prehistoric bat-like creature. Survivor He had no memory of the event, and later had no idea how he had become a bat. Forbidden Fruit

Some time later, Nightscream and Optimus Primal chanced upon the cave again while fleeing from Vehicons. Nightscream realized that the cave was full of fossils, and Optimus correctly intuited that Cybertron must have once possessed an organic ecosystem. Survivor The Maximals set up a new base in the cave. While trying to irrigate some seeds they had found, they managed to tap into Cybertron's organic core, causing trees to emerge from the organic goo. When Tankor attacked, he temporarily turned the plants into technomatter with the Key to Vector Sigma, but the process was ultimately undone. The Key

After Optimus realized that his mission was to create a technorganic balance on Cybertron, he started a new technorganic orchard somewhere else, and everybody just kind of forgot about the cave. Fallout
