A transformation scheme is the process by which the parts of an individual Transformer move and shift in relation to each other to convert it from one mode to another. Though some Transformers share identical or similar transformation schemes, most are unique to the individual. The amount of detail this gets in fiction varies widely, from “cheatsy” animation utilizing motion blur to the highly-detailed computer animation in the live action movies. In the toys this concept can change the way a toy looks in either mode drastically (see: shellformer, kibble).

Those legs have to go somewhere when you turn into a car.

Fiction

Generation 1 cartoon

In Masquerade, when Optimus Prime disguises himself as Motormaster, even his transformation scheme changes.

Beast Wars cartoon

Optimus Primal's legs turn 180 degrees in relation to his torso when he transforms. Megatron's head in beast mode becomes his right arm, while his tail becomes his left arm.

Rescue Bots Cartoon

Blurr does a kip-up whenever he goes from alternate mode to robot mode.

2015 Robots in Disguise cartoon

Grimlock appears to have to do a full backflip every time he transforms.
