Steelbane came to Earth with the legendary Talisman due to the threat Quintessa and Cybertron now posed to it. Unfortunately, his ship was shot down over Chicago by the TRF and he himself was mortally wounded. He lay unconscious until a group a group of human children investigated his chip and woke him. After saving the Children from the TRF, Cade Yeager returned to help him. Unfortunately, he had been too badly wounded and was leaking energon fast, with Cade apologizing for not being able to do more. Unable to complete his mission, he saw Cade's compassion as a sign he was worthy of the knight's honor. Steelbane presented the Talisman to him, declaring that it would protect him and declaring the ancient phrase to protect the staff. Cade however refused it, believing it a mere trinket offered as a thank you, saying it was not needed and that the knight should keep it. As Cade left, Steelbane used his last moments to bid the Talisman to grow legs and find its new master before he finally died.

Unfortunately, his exchange with Cade was witnessed by the Decepticon Barricade, who reported it to Megatron, who sought the Talisman to find the Staff of Merlin for Quintessa. His body was later found by TRF, which led the human government into their own search for the Staff. His valiant sacrifice was not vain, as the Tailisman did indeed find Cade, who subsequently found the Staff and saved the Earth from Quintessa. The Last Knight
