Garnak is an alien from the IDW portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
It's fun to imagine that he sounds like Bill Fagerbakke.

Garnak is a big dumb lug, only good for taking orders yet just barely qualified to be a janitor. Still, he's friendly enough, especially if you're willing to rescue him from being shipwrecked. He has the ability to heal damage to his body which is good enough to even regrow an eye if necessary.

Fiction

IDW Generation 1 continuity

Garnak and his boss Codder were both from a "collective", from which they were sold to an Ilxian ship where Garnak worked as a custodian. At some point, the ship crashed on planet LV-118, killing everyone on board other than him, Codder, and an Ilxian scientist. The Ilxian developed quite an ego, calling himself "Admiral" and ordering Garnak and Codder around during his attempts to repair the ship, but since he was earnestly trying to get them off the planet, the two listened to him.

After being stuck on the planet for a long time, Garnak and Codder discovered the Autobot Rodimus when he too crashed in the vicinity, and found him similar to the weird "Jangle Man" who lived on LV-118. Though Garnak wanted to show him to the Jangle Man, Codder thought it better to take him to the Admiral. The Admiral tried to use Rodimus's Matrix to power the ship, but he resisted and fled, prompting Garnak and Codder to try to recapture him. Garnak followed him to the Jangle Man's wrecked ship, where he was knocked out by the Jangle Man himself and interrogated by Rodimus. After telling Rodimus about how he got there and what he knew about Wheelie, Garnak agreed to be a part of his plan to steal the Admiral's ship. Returning to the Admiral with Rodimus, Garnak tricked him and Codder into coming outside, where Wheelie called on a Chaosteros to attack them. While his old companions were fighting off the beast, Garnak boarded their ship with the two Autobots and left the planet. The Stars My Destination

Wheelie steered the ship to Cybertron, where after greeting a newly awoken and confused Rodimus, Garnak noted that the Matrix had stopped powering their ship. When the ship was then suddenly broken into, Rodimus sent him to get weapons, and he soon returned and attacked the intruder... who turned out to be Ironhide, another Autobot. They were then attacked by Galvatron's Sweeps and forced to go back into space, now with some additional crew members. Out of the Silent Planet

The crew's next destination was Earth, where the Autobots reunited with Optimus Prime's troops. Garnak was seen sheepishly greeting two tiny humans, Spike Witwicky and Joe Henderson, and continued to follow Rodimus when he and the other Autobots returned to Cybertron to defeat Galvatron. Orphans of the Helix

As the Autobots reached Cybertron, Rodimus had Garnak tell Optimus Prime and Jetfire that Galvatron was sending them a welcome message from the planet's surface. Lamentations He remained on board Omega Supreme as fighting broke out and all flying Autobots attacked Galvatron's Kimia Facility. When Trailbreaker was damaged trying to stop Kimia's cannon from firing, Garnak and Sunstreaker took care of him. Numbers He lived through the crash landing that followed, and helped Sunstreaker load explosives onto his hoverchair in preparation for an attack on Devastator. Kings

After the Chaos war, feeling that Cybertron was no place for him, Garnak joined up with Wheelie and Hardhead on their chosen mission to stand guard over the captive Jhiaxus, leaving the planet behind. Some time into their self-imposed exile, a signal from Arduria caused the mad scientist to begin screaming Orion Pax's name, so Hardhead's team joined up with the former Autobot leader to investigate the planet. Charged with guarding Jhiaxus during the visit to Arduria, Garnak and Wheelie realized they had walked into a Decepticon trap when they were attacked by Bludgeon. Although Garnak survived his altercation with the deranged Decepticon, he lost an eye in the process and was unable to stop Bludgeon from freeing Jhiaxus. Syndromica (1)

Pursuing Bludgeon and Jhiaxus, Garnak and co. found themselves on the time-bending planet LV-117. Orion left to investigate, leaving Garnak and Hardhead on Ark-27 to care for the panicked Wheelie. As they waited, Jhiaxus and Bludgeon appeared and stole a crashed Decepticon cruiser, fleeing the planet. A month later, Orion returned the ship and told his companions as much as he could about his journey through time, and they departed LV-117. Syndromica (2)

Their next port of call was Gorlam Prime, by which point Garnak's eye had healed. There they discovered an immense underground city. It wasn't until they encountered Waspinator who was being attacked by Monstructor, that they discovered the city was actually a Titan. Though the Titan space bridged away, Jhiaxus's plan had been revealed. The planet began to disintegrate, and Garnak and the Autobots piled onto Pax's ship, the Skyroller intending to escape. Homecoming As the planet collapsed, the Skyroller had trouble escaping the gravity well, until the Lost Light came to its rescue. Garnak happily embraced Rodimus. Dark Dawn When Orion went on a mission into the Dead Universe, Garnak and Wheelie hung out on the Skyroller to await his return. Black Metal They were still there after the defeat of Nova Prime, though the portal to the Dead Universe had shrunken to almost nothing. The Becoming
