The story was entitled the Big Shutdown a tribute to the Raymond Chandler novel the "Big Sleep" . Playbacks enntry on the Obscure Transformers Website by Jhiaxus and Monzo surmises that Playback's name is probably some kind of pun on Simon Furman's part

It would seem that it was in fact much simpler than that. A little research shows that Playback is the name of a Raymond Chandler Novel. His last completed Novel.
