Fiction
The only mention of Playback in fiction was in The Big Shutdown! (Marvel UK issues #230-231), in which he was already dead. The story stars Nightbeat, who is often portrayed as a pulp fiction-style detective (even wearing a trenchcoat upon occasion). The title of the story is an obvious homage to the classic detective novel The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, and it is possible that writer Simon Furman took Playback's name from a different Chandler novel, Playback.
