After Grimlock was captured during an ill-advised attempt to destroy the Cybertronian flagship Twilight, Optimus Prime hijacked the Sabre with Kup, Hot Rod, Prowl, and Hound to come to his rescue.
The Sabre's captain was forced to give the proper identification codes to enter the Twilight's security net in exchange for the lives of his crew. They fired on the prison ship transporting Grimlock's team to the Liege Maximo, enabling them to mount an insurrection.
The Sabre's crew was allowed to escape in life pods after the rescue was complete. Devices and Desires!
IDW Generation 1 continuity
After Starscream had released Chromia with the task to hunt down and kill Liege Maximo, Heavy he and Obsidian provided her with the Sabre along with Greenlight and Lancer to serve as her crew. The Chosen One
After heading out however, the crew came under attack from a group of Maximals. Though they were able to chase off the invaders, the damage had left the Sabre incapable of communication with Cybertron. By the time they reestablished contact, Unicron was facing off against the Decepticon Vengeance Division with the Sabre reporting on the Decepticons' complete lack of success against the Chaos Bringer. When the monster planet unleashed the Maximals, the Sabre quantum jumped back to Cybertronian orbit. Stranger Eons
When they materialized, they found Unicron had not only beaten them there and assumed a titanic robot mode but had warped the D.V.D. into his service. The Sabre remained high in the sky in the following battle, providing tactical updates to the Council war room and the attacking fleet. Our Finest
