Cave monsters are insectoid aliens that live in caves on an uncharted alien planet. They're very enthuiastic about defending their food supply.

When signs of energon were detected by the Ark on an uncharted alien world, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Grimlock took an shuttle to the planet to investigate. At first they found no energon, but tentacled aliens found them, pulling Grimlock into a crevasse, where Bumblebee and Optimus soon joined him after a cave-in, numerous energon crystals being found in the cave...and the tentacles turning out to be grasping appendages of alien bugs, who aggressively attacked the Autobots in swarms, with defensive fire proving to have little to no effect. It was soon discovered that this was because the energon-based weaponry was only feeding the cave monsters, who were defending their food supply - the crystals of energon. Optimus ordered a retreat, refusing to endanger alien life regardless of the Autobots' need for the fuel. The Journey
