Stakeout is an Autobot Micromaster from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Stakeout used to be the leader of the Rescue Patrol. His overzealous attitude and willingness to break the rules he's supposed to enforce began to get the entire Patrol in trouble with Autobot command. It didn't help that he was contemptuous of non-combat units. However, it was his discussions with his non-combat teammate Fixit that opened Stakeout's optics to his faults as a commander. He soon ceded leadership of the Patrol to Fixit, much to the medic's surprise. Now a much more reasonable officer, Stakeout works hard to support the Patrol's current leader.

Stakeout and his partners were some of the earliest Micromasters—tough go-getters who got things done. That pencil-pusher Emirate Xaaron assigned both the Rescue Patrol and the Race Car Patrol a mission, wherein they would stop the Decepticons' experimentation on the previously-captured Battle Patrol by destroying the installation they were being kept in. Unfortunately, this meant killing everyone within in the process. Upon arrival on-site however, Stakeout's group agreed that their mission felt wrong, and decided to instead stage a daring rescue attempt. Entry to the facility proved a little too easy... Turns out the Decepticons had already successfully reverse-engineered Micromaster technology, and were now using the Autobots to test their new Air Strike Patrol. With a bit of trickery on Roadhandler's part, the Autobots nonetheless managed to liberate their comrades and fled from the installation. A Small War!

Stakeout led the Rescue Patrol during a series of fuel raids on Cybertron alongside Quickmix, Landfill, Scoop and the recently revived Grimlock, Jazz and Bumblebee. Deciding that their efforts would be put to better use with Optimus's group, Xaaron elected to teleport Stakeout and the others to Earth, only for the trans-dimensional portal to be sabotaged by a Decepticon attack as they were preparing to enter it. Both the Autobots and their Decepticon adversaries were diverted to the face of Primus, deep within Cybertron as a result. Yesterday's Heroes! There, they fought those Mayhem Attack Squad punks but were unable to stop Primus being woken up, (noise pollution - three month sentence!) causing Unicron to head towards the planet. Stakeout later led a catch-team to get that murdering creep Whisper—no Christmas peace & goodwill for crime!—and took on those Air Strike Patrol punks. But City Hall got their panties in a bunch over the damage being caused and called Stakeout back to base. The Greatest Gift of All!

Stakeout was among the "new age" Autobots who attended Optimus Prime's meeting with Grimlock and the Dinobots about their more brutal methods. When Grimlock threatened to quit the Autobots, Prime seemed all too willing to let him, and the two of them actually came to blows. After beating some sense into each other, however, Optimus Prime agreed to allow Grimlock his autonomy, to lead "Earthforce" while he and the Ark's crew took off for space. Break-Away!

Stakeout was watching security monitors at Autobase when he noticed that the Battle Patrol wouldn't let the Hot Rod Patrol enter and report crimes taking place in Little Iacon. He took the Hot Rods' side on the matter, and while he couldn't convince the Autobots to let them in, he could at least support them by providing them with weaponry. Recipe for Hate

In the IDW continuity, Stakeout is not a Micromaster.

Stakeout and Carnivac once worked for Ultra Magnus, bringing cross-factional justice to the war. After a time, Carnivac defected to the Decepticons. Sins of the Wreckers #3 Stakeout remained and sometime after the Wreckers' expedition to Garrus-9, Ultra Magnus entrusted Stakeout with watching over Verity Carlo. Who is the manliest bot? STAKEOUT! With the buns of steel? STAKEOUT! Who could choke hold a bear? STAKEOUT!

He eventually made it clear he was watching her and they became friends, living outside Nome, Alaska. At some point, she began to get sick: something they both knew the cause of. Sins of the Wreckers #1 Sins of the Wreckers #2 Stakeout wound up choosing to keep an eye from a distance for her safety soon after that, and five years after Garrus-9, he kicked a bear in the face outside to save her after getting a message from her that she'd been trying to blackmail Prowl. While she was warming up in his back seat, he was shot by Arcee, who was looking for Verity to find information on Prowl's disappearance. Shortly afterwards, he showed up at Arcee's hideout with the Wreckers, interrupting Verity's interrogation. Sins of the Wreckers #1

While the two friends made peace after Stakeout's absence, a wascally wabbit stole the Aequitas data from Verity and Stakeout took off in pursuit... discovering first hand under a lake that the "animals" attacking people were really Transformers in beast disguises, agents of Mayhem! He ended up being swallowed by the whale Transformer, Tidal Wave and jammed into the whale's transformation cog. Sins of the Wreckers #2 When Carnivac, now running Mayhem, returned to the 'base', he was horrified to find his old friend chewed up and near death.

Stakeout and Carnivac spoke for the last time, with the former telling his old friend how Ultra Magnus had always missed him. As he died, Stakeout asked Carnivac to stay with him. Sins of the Wreckers #3

• Rescue Patrol (Micromaster Patrol, 1989)

Stakeout transforms into a black Ford Taurus police car, seemingly inspired by the Detroit police department's Ford Taurus patrol cars as depicted in the movie RoboCop. He was only available as part of the Rescue Patrol, along with his teammates Fixit, Red Hot, and Seawatch.

He is gang-molded with Seawatch, sharing plastic colors.

This toy was sold in Japan without changes as Holi.

Part of the second wave of Siege Micromasters, Stakeout transforms from robot to vaguely-Cybertronian-y police car. He can also combine with his pack-in teammate Red Heat to form a blaster-weapon for larger figures to wield.
