Charlie Watson is your average teenager going through some things — she's still recovering from the loss of her father, and the fact that her mother has a new boyfriend isn't helping matters. She tends to bury herself in her two main passions in life: music, particularly the music of The Smiths, and her attempts to finish restoring a Corvette that she and her father had been working on before he died.

Charlie was on the school dive team, up until the death of her father, at which point it became an unpleasant association and she gave it up She continued to work on the Corvette, using money from a job selling hot dogs at the local fairground in Brighton Falls to buy parts from Uncle Hank's auto repair.
The day before her eighteenth birthday, she started off by throwing out her old diving trophies. During her working day at the fairground, she accidentally spilled drinks all over Tripp Summers, earning her a mocking from Tripp's girlfriend Tina and her friends. While searching for spare parts at Uncle Hank's, she stumbled on a derelict Volkswagen. Unfortunately the spare parts turned out to be inadequate to finish fixing the Corvette and, despairing, she went to bed.
For birthday gifts, she was presented with a helmet (her mother had heard that riding mopeds without one was unsafe) and a book on smiling more from Ron. After stewing in her room for a while, she headed to Uncle Hank's, prepared to make a deal for the Volkswagen, however he simply gave it to her, and she was overjoyed when she was able to get it running. The bigger surprise was when she got the car home, it turned into a giant robot. She quickly realized he was as afraid of her as she was of him, and also that he was mute. With him unable to tell her anything, she dubbed him "Bumblebee".
The next morning, Bumblebee had gone missing—Charlie's mother had taken the VW so she could get their dog Conan to the vet. Charlie was forced to chase them down and insist on driving Bumblebee herself. She later took Bee to a beach so he could practice disguising himself to keep himself a secret. An attempt by her to fix Bumblebee's chest resulted in her accidentally activating a holographic recording of Optimus Prime, after which she agreed to help by fixing Bumblebee's radio. She successfully transplanted the Corvette's radio into him, however during the ensuing celebrations, Memo burst in, intending to ask Charlie on a date. She swore him to secrecy before taking him on a drive in Bumblebee. The trio ended up on a cliff at the sea edge where Tripp was intending to dive in and daring anyone to join him. Despite Bee volunteering her, Charlie was unable to bring herself to dive, earning scorn from her peers, especially Tina. Charlie, Memo and Bumblebee went to get revenge by TPing Tina's house and egging her car, however this went badly wrong due to Bumblebee's not understanding things and resulted in Bee taking Charlie and Memo on an involuntary police chase.
Figuring it would be safer, Charlie left Bumblebee at home the following day and went to work. She received a call from Memo and rushed home to find Bumblebee had accidentally trashed the house after venturing in from the garage. After a disagreement with her mother, she and Memo left in Bumblebee to cool off, only to run into Sector Seven, who had tracked down Bumblebee's signal with the help of the Decepticons Shatter and Dropkick. During the ensuing battle, Charlie tried to protect Bee from Sector Seven's weapons and was knocked unconscious. She woke up in her bed, and was unable to defend herself against accusations leveled by Agent Burns that she'd stolen Bumblebee from the government. Despite her mother sending her to her room, Charlie snuck out, collecting Memo and enlisting her brother Otis to cover her escape so she could go and find Bumblebee.
She and Memo managed to infiltrate McKinnon Air Base where she watched the Decepticons interrogate and dispatch Bumblebee. After the Cons had left, she successfully revived Bee using Sector Seven's electrical guns. When Agent Burns and his men turned up a short time later, he fought them off, however despite Charlie's assertion they should go hide out, Bumblebee wanted to stop the Decepticons from sending a message to bring the Decepticon army to Earth. Charlie insisted on going with him to the docks, where the Cons were modifying a radio tower, and while Bumblebee battled Dropkick, she managed to get to the tower. She disconnected the power, stopping the signal while Bumblebee dispatched Shatter by flooding the dry dock, and Charlie subsequently dove into the water so she could help Bumblebee. The pair fled the scene on Agent Burns's urging, and after a tearful farewell near the Golden Gate Bridge, Charlie and Bumblebee went their separate ways.
Charlie returned home and was reunited with her family, and also with Memo. She later succeeded in getting the Corvette running. Bumblebee
