The Autobots and Decepticons encounter a pair of bots who have been feuding for millenia.

Synopsis

At the Ark, Wheeljack is just explaining to Optimus Prime how his latest invention will help track down Starscream when the ship shudders from the impact of explosions. When all Teletraan-X can tell him is that they are under attack, Optimus instantly knows who is responsible. "Starscream!"

Meanwhile at the Nemesis, Shockwave is just explaining to Megatron how his latest invention will help them seize control of Starscream's creatures when the ship shudders from the impact of explosions. Megatron instantly knows who to blame: "Starscream!"

However, Shadow Striker looks up from her instruments to correct her master. The attacker isn't Starscream but someone completely unexpected: the long presumed dead Autobot Jetfire! The Autobot declares that his justice will prevail, while back at the Ark their attacker is revealed to be the equally thought dead Decepticon Sky-Byte.

Optimus leads the Autobots to confront Sky-Byte, with both Hot Rod and Bumblebee expressing surprise at seeing the shark as they'd thought he and Jetfire had both perished in a supernova. Upon hearing his hated enemy's name, Sky-Byte demands to know where the Autobots are hiding Jetfire, scoffing when Optimus tries to explain Jetfire is no more. Stating that only he could possibly end Jetfire's life, Sky-Byte transforms and leaves.

Meanwhile, an annoyed Megatron yells at Jetfire that Sky-Byte is not at the Nemesis and that no one cares about their stupid feud. Not wanting to waste any more time on a thug like Megatron while a villain while Sky-Byte is on the loose, Jetfire transforms and leaves. He quickly finds the Ark and greets his old friends, before asking if Hot Rod is responsible for the Ark's half-buried condition. At the same time, Sky-Byte arrives at the Nemesis and is welcomed aboard by Megatron.

Both Sky-Byte and Jetfire update their respective comrades on what they'd been up to since they'd last been seen: after Sky-Byte triggered a supernova that wiped out seven civilizations, Jetfire had been doggedly pursuing him throughout space, their battles leaving countless ruined and lifeless star systems in their wake. They have now come to their comrades to ask for help in destroying their rival forever. However, both are disappointed when Optimus and Megatron refuse. With the AllSpark somewhere on the planet, their vendetta is not high priority.

Shortly after leaving the Nemesis, Sky-Byte comes under attack by Jetfire, and after a short aerial battle both combatants plummet to earth. A surprised Thundercracker witnesses their crash and rushes to the scene.

Upon regaining consciousness, Jetfire finds himself before Starscream and when the Seeker greets him as an old friend retorts that their friendship ended long ago. Taking the rebuttal in stride, Starscream shows him the AllSpark, promising to use its power to help him end Sky-Byte. Jetfire instantly accepts. Likewise, Starscream offers his aid to Sky-Byte, who also eagerly accepts. Granting both rivals new armour (a drilling machine for Sky-Byte and a tank for Jetfire), Starscream lets both of them loose, revealing that it is a ploy to distract both Autobots and Decepticons from his plans.

Sky-Byte quickly takes Optimus prisoner, while Jetfire likewise captures Megatron. The two agree to meet at a location of Megatron's suggestion, which turns out to be some sort of arena. Sky-Byte and Jetfire quickly engage in battle, their spark armour giving them both enormous power. The fight eventually goes underground into catacombs beneath the arena, until Sky-Byte manages to penetrate the Earth's mantle and bring magma flowing into the catacombs. The battle causes part of the the surface to collapse, sending Optimus plunging to the bottom and badly injuring him.

Sky-Byte is in poor shape after his unexpected plunge into the magma and is in no shape to defend himself, leading Jetfire to declare his victory and prepare to end his rival once and for all. However, Megatron's gleeful urging to take the shot, combined with Optimus groaning in pain convince Jetfire to let his hated foe live for now and instead get Optimus urgent medical attention. As Jetfire flies Optimus to safety, a weary Sky-Byte painfully climbs out of the hole he'd dug only for Megatron to greet him at fusion cannon-point and demand his "old friend" lead him to the AllSpark.

Back at the Ark, as Jetfire helps Optimus limp back aboard he assures his commander that he believes he can help with the search for the AllSpark...

Notes

Continuity notes

  • Megatron's interest in having the feuding bots settle things in a coliseum stems from his history as a gladiator, which has been touched on in previous episodes.
