The Autobots and Decepticons combine forces to liberate Cybertron from a sinister alien force.

Synopsis

Kup explains to his audience the nature of War Titans. Tough, and armed with enough firepower to take on a neutron star. But Iaconus is just a straight-up berserker.

Standing over Iacon City, the newly awoken Iaconus draws his sword, and smashes the nearest building with it. Watching, Maccadam observes that the day has finally arrived, and laments that he doesn't know how it ends... inside the Titan's mind, Windblade watches as he randomly smashes every building in sight. She commands him to listen, telling him Cybertron is under attack, and it's his job to defend it. She points out the distant form of Judge Starscream, and Iaconus immediately charges towards his new enemy. Seeing the colossal 'bot heading towards him, Starscream panics and calls the Scientist, demanding he do something. Intrigued by the sight of Iaconus, which he claims has never happened before in any of the Quintesson's conquests, the Scientist reassures Starscream he's prepared for all eventualities, and pressing a panel at his computer, tells the Seeker the Titan won't be a problem.

A ball of fire hurtles from the sky, landing at Iaconus's feet. It's Croaton, who has been enslaved and upgraded by the Quintessons. The two Titans square off, Croaton summoning an energy whip which momentarily immobilizes his opponent, until Iaconus uses his sword to slice himself free. But Croaton has another weapon, a large cannon, which knocks Iaconus onto his back. Windblade urges him to get up, but Iaconus states he is not so easily defeated. As the controlled Croaton approaches, ready to down his enemy, Iaconus kicks him hard, and uses the advantage to let loose with every missile he has, knocking Croaton over. Iaconus tries to use his own cannon to slay Croaton, but the other Titan summons an energy shield, deflecting the attack. In the Quintesson prison, the captive Autobots and Decepticons are awed.

Meanwhile, in the strange other universe, Optimus is having difficulties with gravity. As he declares their present location his least favorite universe, Bumblebee sees Wheeljack stirring. The scientist is wowed by the sight of the universe, then uses his grappling gun to make his way over to Optimus, Bee, and the multiversal portal. He asks if they hadn't just considered using that to get home, and activates it. As they step through, he admits he doesn't know where they'll wind up, but it'll be home sweet home.

As it turns out, "where" turns out to be the Scientist's laboratory. As Optimus sees the sight of the Titans fighting, the Scientist appears, ready to inflict some science on the Autobots. Outside, Iaconus and Croaton continue brawling, weapons forgotten in favour of simply punching one another. The sight of "his" Titan losing incenses Starscream enough to make him go yell at Croaton, completely forgetting the captive Arcee, leaving her subject to the whims of gravity, though fortunately Grimlock catches her.

While Starscream rages at Croaton, Maccadam casually strolls into the Quintesson prison, which gets him noticed by the guards. Unconcerned, Maccadam transforms and makes short work of the Quintessons and Sharkticons. That done, he tells Autobots and Decepticons it's been his pleasure to serve them, and says it's time to get them out.

Starscream tries pointing out Croaton's armaments to the enslaved Titan, and in Iaconus's mind, Windblade tells the War Titan to attack him. So Iaconus punches Starscream, sending him flying into the distance, though this gives Croaton the opening to tackle him.

In their simulated prison, Hot Rod and Soundwave have buffed away nearly all of the Rust Plague... save for one spot they missed. As the wall of rust approaches them, they seem doomed... Until they're freed from the simulation by their comrades. As they leave, Hot Rod notices Maccadam staying behind, and calls for the bartender to come with him. Cryptic to the last, he responds that his time has come, as outside, Croaton deflects another shot from Iaconus, the beam heading toward the prison. Saying it's not Hot Rod's time, Maccadam shoves him out of the way, as the beam hits him. And with a massive explosion, Maccadam perishes. Inside Iaconus's mind, Windblade hears the War Titan rage at the loss of his last citizen, before noticing Croaton charging at Iaconus again.

Inside the Scientist's lair, Optimus and Bumblebee gun down copy after copy of the Scientist, but Optimus notes they can't keep going on this way. Looking at one of the corpses, Wheeljack discovers it's giving off a signal, and follows it to a panel in the floor. Opening it, he finds a subchamber. Inside, he finds the true form of the Scientist, a diminutive spider thing. The Scientist panics, summoning tendrils to try and immobilize Wheeljack, but the Autobot effortlessly overcomes them, and brings his fist down on the Quintesson. Upstairs, the various bodies of the Scientists die with their controller. The three leave to find the others, unaware as they go of the late Scientist's collection of Soundwaves, who all reactivate...

Iaconus manages to overpower Croaton, and prepares to deal the finishing blow to his opponent, as Starscream returns. Angrily demanding if he must do everything himself, Starscream summons a portion of unspace, which surrounds Iaconus's head and removes it. Dead, the last War Titan's body falls backwards and shifts back into its city mode. With his opponent gone, Croaton spots Optimus, Bumblebee and Wheeljack emerging from the tower's ruins, and advances.

Notes

Continuity notes

  • The Scientist's impressive collection of preserved Soundwaves was established in "The Scientist". At the time, there wasn't any indication they were actually still alive.

Transformers references

  • Iaconus' reversion to city mode after his head's destruction echoes rigor morphis from the 2005 IDW continuity.

Other trivia

  • Not to nitpick, but if Maccadam hadn't been standing exactly where he'd been standing, and had just moved like Hot Rod said, he wouldn't have gotten himself killed in the first place. But then, he's the guy who can see the future.
