Alan Dean Foster is an American science fiction and fantasy writer.

A prolific author (and in some cases, ghostwriter) of movie novelizations, Foster wrote both the novelization of the 2007 Transformers movie and the prequel novel Transformers: Ghosts of Yesterday. The latter was originally to be written by David Cian, but Cian's version didn't meet Paramount's and Hasbro's expectations. Therefore, Foster was hired to rewrite Cian's 62,000 word manuscript.

In an interview, Foster admitted that he didn't have any knowledge about the Transformers other than being "advertised children's toys" prior to being hired to write the movie-related novels, and therefore simply based the characters in his books on their portrayal in the screenplay for the movie, without undertaking any additional research.
