Established in 2005, Base FX is a visual effects studio based out of China. The studio would start off working on TV series like HBO's Boardwalk Empire before branching out to films, including the 2010 King of Fighters adaptation, Curse of Chucky and Olympus has Fallen.

The studio entered a "Strategic Relationship"<ref>this how the studio describes the partnership</ref> with American-based Industrial Light & Magic in 2012, becoming a full-time subcontractor to the latter. As such, they would contribute to many of ILM's film efforts, including entries in both of Disney's Star Wars films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jurassic World, Battleship and Pacific Rim.

As a result of their partnership with ILM, the studio would be brought on for several entries in the live-action movies, mainly the fourth and fifth films, as well as the Bumblebee spinoff.
