Scarem's downed stasis pod was remotely-reprogrammed at Magmatron's behest, introducing a Predacon shell program into the protoform. Something went wrong and Scarem, while now a Predacon in programming, still feels the moralistic twinges of a Maximal deep within his core. This causes him all manner of angst. Beast Wars Sourcebook #3

Magmatron came to prehistoric Earth to gather an army using the Axalon's protoforms. Scarem was among the protoforms to be successfully turned into Predacons. Magmatron ordered his forces to seek out the double-agent Razorbeast and his crew of Maximals. Within a few days, the Predacons had located the Maximal headquarters, and battle ensued. During that battle, Scarem tangled with Ramulus. The Maximals won that fight, and the surviving Predacons retreated into the wilderness. Whether Scarem was among the survivors is unknown. Scarem? I hardly knew 'em!
  • Scarem (Transmetal 2 Basic, 1999)
Scarem transforms into a Transmetal 2 scarab; though he incorporates several elements of the European stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) in his head shape and mandibles. He sports a green, orange, and chromed blue colour scheme, and his chest flips open to reveal his spark crystal. Along with fellow Transmetals 2, Tigerhawk, Optimus Minor, and Sonar, Scarem has a bizarre feature where he can gain extra limbs; his robot legs can separate, making him a quadruped (as he is portrayed in his package art).
This toy was sold in Japan in theaters as an "import" with a Japanese sticker in conjunction with 1999 Summer Toei Anime Fair.

And you thought they couldn't make me uglier.
  • In The Gathering, Scarem only appears once in the actual story, during the climactic battle in the fourth issue. He also appears on one of the covers for the first issue.
  • The version that appears on the packaging cross-sell uses an earlier color scheme planned for the figure. Most notably, said color scheme replaces the green paint with yellow and uses a darker shade of green for the plastic.
