Saigon (Sài Gòn), formally known as Ho Chi Minh City since the end of the Vietnam War, is the largest and most populous city in Vietnam. From 1887 to 1902, and again from 1945 until its cessation in 1954, Saigon served as the capital of French Indochina. When French Indochina was partitioned into North and South Vietnam, Saigon became the capital of South Vietnam until it fell at the end of the war in 1975.
