In the midst of battle, the evil Nemesis Prime appears.

Synopsis

The wisdom that had been held in the Matrix has been emptied, but it still contains the potential to be refilled with new wisdom, worrying the currently disembodied Unicron, who still orbits Cybertron. An instrument of his will soon comes when he sees a piece of metal debris that he recognizes as originating from the current holder of the Matrix, Supreme Commander Optimus Prime. Swallowing the piece, Unicron uses material within his head to construct a full being using Optimus Prime's specifications, creating a mighty clone of the Autobot hero. With this new herald, Unicron will have his resurrection and revenge.

During a fierce battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons on Cybertron, the clone lands on the battlesite. At first, the outnumbered Autobots rejoice while the Decepticons are petrified. However, their expectations are turned on their head as the Autobot forces are demolished by the "devil" bearing Optimus Prime's likeness. The clone, dubbed "Nemesis Prime", is invited into the Decepticon forces, where he quickly rises through the ranks despite other Decepticons' wariness due to his appearance. But this is all part of the plan...

When Unicron's head finally faces Cybertron during its orbit, Nemesis Prime decides to strike the Energy Dock at Iacon, which is under Decepticon control. Slaughtering the Decepticon security forces, Nemesis Prime absorbs the energy reserves into his Dead Matrix so that his master can be resurrected. Alerted of the battle, Optimus Prime and his Autobots arrive at the scene and the three factions wage battle against each other. Eventually, the two Primes come face-to-face. Delighted at the opportunity to kill his forebear and destroy the Matrix, Nemesis Prime faces off against Optimus Prime with the fate of the universe at stake.

Notes

• This story appears to take place after the Matrix was emptied to cure the universe of the Hate Plague in "The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2" and before the beginning of The Headmasters, in which Optimus Prime dies early on. This also takes place before the later Generations Selects Special Comic, as Unicron is sealed into the Triple Z Point during the course of the story and Optimus Prime has already left the Matrix on Earth to recharge it.
• The story also establishes that the Autobots and Decepticons are once again in direct conflict with each other, as Nemesis makes his first appearance during a fierce battle between the two factions. This would mean that the truce first declared by Galvatron at the end of "The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2" is officially over, and that the later-set 2011 scenes of the Generations Selects Special Comic also take place after that truce had ended, which makes its Autobot-Decepticon alliance against Unicron a different truce altogether (one likely formed only temporarily due to the imminent threat of Unicron's return).
• The fragment of Optimus Prime that Unicron encounters is perhaps from the events of "Dark Awakening".
