The Family Computer (ファミリーコンピュータ Famirī Konpyūta), commonly abbreviated as the Famicom (ファミコン Famikon), is a video game console released by Nintendo in 1983 and the Japanese counterpart to the :}}Nintendo Entertainment System|. It was succeeded by the :}}Super Nintendo Entertainment System| in 1990, though it continued to receive new releases for almost five more years.

In 1986, to reduce the production and distribution costs of new games, Nintendo released the :}}Famicom Disk System|, a peripheral that could read games from special floppy disks. In addition to having higher storage capacity, improved sound, and the ability to save game progress, the disks used by the FDS were rewritable, allowing players to take their disks to special kiosks and replace its existing contents with a new game. Several games were only available via this format, though some like Metroid and :}}The Legend of Zelda (video game)| were converted to cartridge for their releases outside Japan.

Fiction

Victory comic

In an attempt to bribe Jan into joining his "Decepticon Boy Team" with Solon, Deathsaurus zapped into existence in front of Jan, among many things, a Famicom console. Being a prepubescent boy, Jan was thrilled at the prospect of owning the hottest video game console (along with fruit and ice cream). When Star Saber crashed the party, Jan rejected the gifts, preferring to side with Star Saber, whom he considered to be family. Danger, Jan! Hurry, Star Saber!

Notes

 • Evidently, in the 21st century of the Victory comic universe, Nintendo never made any other console after the Famicom.
