Aubrey Sitterson

Too swole to control.

Aubrey Sitterson is a freelance writer and podcaster. He wrote G.I. Joe vol. 5 and Scarlett's Strike Force for IDW Publishing. Sitterson's take on G.I. Joe explored the more outre aspects of the franchise's history, including a move to have the team shoot colored lasers per the 1980s cartoon as opposed to real bullets and the inclusion of oddball concepts like the "Fatal Fluffies" and Hasbro's short-lived Army Ants. He also revamped the largely inconsequential Joe character "Salvo" into a Samoan-American woman (as opposed to a bald white guy). Combine all of that with some honest but harsh statements about 9/11, and Sitterson wound up "alienating" portions of the G.I. Joe fandom, as well as drawing the ire of various right-wing comics fans outside the Joe audience.

IDW and Hasbro had a tête-à-tête to discuss the matter, and...

When everything went down in September, IDW told me that if I wanted to stay on the book, I couldn’t do interviews or anything to promote it, and IDW PR even shut down a podcast interview I lined up...Aubrey Sitterson,

IDW released a statement on Facebook disavowing Sitterson (though not by name), and Scarlett's Strike Force was officially cancelled before the first issue was even published due to "low sales"—unsurprising, perhaps, given that Sitterson was told not to do any promotional work on behalf of the title.
