• "Pale fire" is a common collocation in English literature, first coined by the line "The moon's an arrant thief, and her pale fire she snatches from the sun" in Shakespeare's Timon of Athens. It is most famously used as the title of Vladimir Nabokov's novel Pale Fire, an early work of metafiction with many layers and possible interpretations.
