Medix's patience is put to the test when the recruits are given the task of training five metal-munching Scraplets.
Synopsis
[edit]The recruits are heading to another of Boulder's "mystery lessons". Though Whirl is excited, the others are more wary and Hot Shot has even brought the Lucky Ducky along. Boulder asks the recruits their opinion on Scraplets, which turns out to be veering towards the negative. He reveals five Scraplets in cages, which results in Hot Shot fleeing the room in terror. Boulder believes if the Scraplets are treated well, they could be taught to work with the recruits. Hot Shot returns with an anti-Scraplet device—a large wooden box he can hide in. Boulder hands the recruits energon biscuits to use as rewards, and leaves them to it. Their first attempts at instruction don't go well, and then Medix accidentally deactivates the force field on his Scraplet's cage, resulting in him having to take refuge atop Hot Shot's box.
The recruits take the Scraplets outside, but their attempts to get the Scraplets to play fetch don't go well, and more attempts at instruction in the gym go similarly disastrously, ending up with the Scraplets chasing the recruits through the halls. The recruits throw their energon biscuits into the cages, allowing them to trap the creatures. The conclusion they come to is that it's impossible to train a Scraplet, however as Medix is leaving, he accidentally steps on the Rubber Ducky and notes the Scraplets respond to its squeaking.
The other recruits respond to an alarm and find Sludge and Snarl have sounded an alert from Cybertron. There's an energon power reactor that's in danger, so Boulder sends the recruits through the space bridge to stop it exploding. Unfortunately Snarl's not that great at following Hoist's instructions and accidentally puts the building into lockdown. The recruits are unable to gain entry until Medix arrives with the Scraplets and a "Ducktaphone" he's rigged up. He instructs the Scraplets to head through the building's air vents to the control room where they hit the button to stabilize the power core. Back on Earth, Boulder congratulates Medix on training the Scraplets, and Hot Shot's attempt to use the critters to perform tricks is interrupted by Wedge.

"Well, it's been nice knowing you, Snarl."
"Yeah, it probably has."
- —Sludge and Snarl say their goodbyes.
Notes
[edit]Continuity notes
[edit]- The recruits previously encountered scraplets back in "Metal Munchers".
- Cody gave Hot Shot the Rubber Duck in "Lucky Ducky".
Transformers references
[edit]- Boulder name-drops "living metal", the stuff Transformers are made out of, and notes that Scraplets prefer eating it because of its Energon content.
Real-world references
[edit]- The title is a reference to the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.
Animation and technical errors
[edit]- TBA
Trivia
[edit]- Scraplets don't eat non-metals, which includes wood, as Boulder notes.
- The recruits name some of the Scraplets: Snappy (Wedge), Giggles (Whirl), Basher (Hoist), and Squeaker (Medix). Hot Shot doesn't give his a name.
- Why are Sludge and Snarl apparently the only ones in charge of a power plant on Cybertron?
