At the Parque Zoologico de Merida, tour guide Pedro leads a class of children through the exhibits, stopping at the gorillas, with a solitary gorilla eliciting excited laughter from the children. Pedro explains that he is a new arrival named "Garry", who wandered into a camp site in the Virunga Mountains. Despite his healthy body, "Garry" has remained depressed since arriving at the zoo, much to the confusion of the zoo's doctors. Pedro leads the class to the next exhibit, but one student remains behind to touch the glass. The teacher soon calls after him, and as the student runs to catch up with the others, he does not notice as "Garry" goes up to place his hand on the glass in emulation...
Elsewhere, Spike, Elizabeth, and the Autobot Pretenders follow the mysterious man through the woods, wary of the man's intentions. Arriving at a cliff, Metalhawk asks the man how much longer their journey will take. The man tells them they've already arrived, and turns off a cloaking device...and then, with a cry of "Suit on!", transforms into a Decepticon Pretender! Taking aim at Spike and Elizabeth, Metalhawk sheds his disguise as well to save his human companions, while Vroom and Crossblades confront the Decepticon. Strangely, the Decepticon is pleased with their nobility and willingness to protect the humans; he demands that they show him how they fight back. Before anyone can get injured, Metalhawk calls for Vroom and Crossblades at the bottom of the cliff-side, where a Decepticon cruiser lies, though not one that Metalhawk recognizes. The Decepticon explains that he, too, is a Transformer...but one native to this universe, one that no longer has a Cybertron. The Decepticon explains that, much like any other dimension, the planet fell into civil war between the two factions. As technology marched on, both sides tried to create ultimate weapons to destroy the others. Finally, the Decepticons created a being to embody anger and hate, power and punishment, death itself...and they succeeded. The Decepticon explains that he left his comrades behind as Cybertron was destroyed, crashing on this planet. With little to no advanced lifeforms, the Decepticon was safe...until cities, factories, technology, and humanity started teleporting in. The Decepticon took on human form to find supplies for his ship, so that he might escape before the ultimate weapon arrived, drawn by the communications signals the humans put out. However, when he detected an odd signal, he came to Merida to investigate, finding the five. Metalhawk questions the Decepticon on his identity, and the Decepticon answers, having figured they would have recognized him already; with a cry of "Pretender!", the Decepticon reveals himself to be none other than Megatron!
Inside a cave, Ramjet's signal has finally attracted the power source's he has been searching for: the Mayhem Attack Squad. The hot-headed Ruckus scoffs at the seemingly ordinary Decepticon, and prepares to kill him, but Bludgeon stops him. Ramjet goes up to the Bludgeon, attracted to the Matrix of Malice inside the commander's chest. Bludgeon threatens the mysterious Decepticon, but Ramjet tells him not to worry; he's dealt with evil Matrices before, and this one has no connection to his master, instead proposing an alliance. An infuriated Ruckus demands to know what he could possibly provide them; Ramjet grabs the insolent Decepticon with his anti-matter infused fist, and throws him back. The others, suitably impressed, ask Ramjet what his goal is, and Ramjet is all too happy to answer: to destroy the entire universe.
Ramjet senses an evil presence unrelated to Unicron within the Matrix of Malice; the Of Masters and Mayhem prose stories would reveal that the Matrix contains the spark of Thunderwing.
Hinting at his true identity, "Garry the Gorilla" is named after Garry Chalk, voice actor of Beast Wars/Beast MachinesOptimus Primal. Furthering the reference, Pedro mentions the next exhibit the class is headed towards is the rhinoceroses; Primal's second-in-command and good friend Rhinox turned into one.
The Pretenders returning to their true size and appearance is accompanied with a cry of "Suit on!", the Pretenders raising their fists above their heads crossed as light radiates out from them, which is how the Autobot Pretenders were depicted in Super-God Masterforce. Similarly, when Megatron removes his shell, he shouts "Pretender!", as also seen in Super-God Masterforce.
Megatron's cruiser is a smaller version of the Victory, the Decepticon ship in the opening three-part mini-series of the Sunbow The Transformers cartoon, "More than Meets the Eye". Metalhawk is unfamiliar with the design, as he hails from a splinter timeline of the Marvel The Transformers comic, where the Victory didn't exist.
Ruckus swears by the Pit, the Cybertronian version of Hell first mentioned in the Beast Wars cartoon. He also uses the expletive "scrud," introduced in the 2015 Robots in Disguise cartoon.
This chapter confirms that the buildings and technology of the Classics Earth were transported to the Of Masters of Mayhem universe by Gaea alongside humanity and the animals.
On panel two of page three, Metalhawk's fingers are colored the same blue as the sky in the background.
Not an error per se, but whereas the illustrations for the Of Masters and Mayhem prose story "The Toxic Transformer" depicted the native Cybertronians in their Marvel comic colors, the glimpse of Optimus, Megatron, and the others renders them with cartoon color schemes.
