Chronology The Dark Ages

Trypticon decimates the Autobots, but Grimlock has more important concerns.

Synopsis

[edit]

Prowl's team of Autobots scramble, overwhelmed by attacks from the amused Trypticon. Prowl orders the Autobots to split up, but Trypticon is able to hunt his prey with his impressive arsenal. Prowl sends a desperate radio message for help to anyone who might hear it.

In Uraya, the Dynobots debate with their leader, Grimlock, over whether they should respond to it or not. Grimlock maintains that it's more important to investigate the affairs of Jetfire and Shockwave, having had his suspicions about the former Decepticon scientist for a long time, and while the others don't care much about Prowl and his lot, they really want to have a go at that battle-base. Swoop's question of what the Decepticons would do with the base after it's done with the Autobots gives Grimlock pause...

Jetfire and Shockwave meet and pool their available data, trying to infer who is gathering data on all sides to manipulate them. But before they can discover the truth, the two come under attack from the Chaos Trinity.

At Praetorus Wharf, Hound arrives with a few Autobot reinforcements, the few Autobots he could scrounge up. He remarks to Prowl that if he were a paranoid sort, he'd think someone was manipulating them.

Elsewhere, Bludgeon goes one-on-one with Shockwave, thanks to a boost from dark science, distracting Shockwave enough for Bugly to paralyze him with his electro-stingers. Jetfire's unable to assist, his mind locked into a trance by Mindwipe. The three start to take their bounty home, but as soon as they wonder where Grimlock is, the angry Dynobot gets the drop on them. Grimlock quickly disables the three. Jetfire thanks Grimlock for the rescue, but Grimlock attacks Jetfire too, something The Fallen doesn't approve of.

The rest of the Dynobots assist Prowl's Autobots against Trypticon. Eventually, all their skid plates are saved when the behemoth is summoned away.

Grimlock attacks Jetfire, who only dodges. Grimlock ignores any reasoning Jetfire spouts. Grimlock explains that it was he who summoned Trypticon away so he might save the Autobots. But before Grimlock can finish executing Jetfire, The Fallen arrives.

Quotes

[edit]

"Let's face it. If I can snare a mind as analytical as Jetfire's... yours should only be protoform-play to contr-"
THWAMM!
"Why everybody underestimate me?"

Mindwipe gets his ass whipped by Grimlock

"What was that thing me have to do?"
"...Grimlock?"
"Oh, yes. Execute you for treason!"

Grimlock has some issues with Jetfire

"I don't mean to get personal, but who exactly designed you? I mean... what are you even supposed to be?"
"Uh-huh-uh. Pretty dumb looking!"

Sludge and Snarl don't appreciate Trypticon's dinosaur-like robot mode

Grimlock: "Talk too much!"
Jetfire: "Hoff!"
Grimlock: "Already took care of battle base. Transmit message to Decepticon command HQ, using stolen code. Tell them Shockwave in danger, send battle-base. As for rest of nonsense... ...that all in your soon-to-be-severed head!"
The Fallen: "No."
Grimlock: "No?"
The Fallen: "NO."

—Grimlock finds that bravado isn't quite enough to handle The Fallen.

Notes

[edit]

Continuity notes

[edit]
  • Gadgets and powers:
    • Hound displays his hologramatic ability in an attempt to distract Trypticon.
    • Trailbreaker uses his forcefield to defend himself.
    • Among Trypticon's weaponry is the ability to breath fire. He also claims to have no weak spots anywhere.
    • Bludgeon is able to go toe-to-toe with Shockwave, who's generally depicted as one of the stronger Decepticons. He chalks this up to a power boost from dark science. He also has a retractable blade in his right arm.
    • Bugly zaps Shockwave with his electro-stingers, which quickly paralyze a 'bot. Bugly remarks some folks never recover. Shockwave later recovers with no ill effects, by the by.
    • Mindwipe uses his hypnosis powers on Jetfire, but they do absolutely nothing to Grimlock.
    • The Fallen effortlessly catches Grimlock's energon sword in one hand, with no sign of pain or discomfort. He is old because he is hard.
  • Grimlock caught Jetfire's communique to Shockwave at the end of last issue. Turns out Bludgeon leaked it hoping to lure Grim into a trap.
  • Future Dinobot Snarl disses Trypticon's appearance. Oh, cruel irony.

Transformers references

[edit]
  • Trailbreaker refers to Trypticon as an "oversized Scraplet".

Real life references

[edit]
  • Bludgeon says "There are more things in the universe and Cybertron than are dreamed of in your philosophy!" which is a paraphrase of a famous line from Hamlet.

Other trivia

[edit]
  • The "Declarations of War" page has various pieces of fan-submitted artwork of characters in Cybertronian forms. The winner was Ansun Yan with a design for Ultra Magnus.
  • The "Wavelengths" section contains an article from the desk of Rob Ruffolo.

Errors

[edit]
  • Swoop switches from his red (toy) coloration to his blue (cartoon) coloration on certain pages.
  • When Jetfire asks Grimlock, "How did you -- ?", Grimlock responds, "Trade secret," but Jetfire is drawn answering instead of Grimlock. This is corrected in the trade.
  • When Bludgeon tells Jetfire, "But then, it's not him we're after... ...it's you!", the speech bubble comes from Jetfire instead who is currently hypnotised. This is corrected in the trade.
  • When Snarl talks to Sludge after mocking Trypticon, he calls Sludge "Snarl".
