The Autobots pull a fast one.
Synopsis
[edit]Starscream returns to the Decepticon base with news to report, but waits until he has garnered a sizeable audience before he will deliver it. Megatron loses patience with him and fires a warning shot so Starscream blurts out that he intercepted information from the Autobots that they have discovered a crashed Cybertronian spaceship on Table Mountain in Africa, along with the star charts to lead them home. The Decepticons set off for Africa at once.
Once there, Soundwave intercepts more Autobot communications revealing that the large, spherical ship had been shielded by a phase-accumulator that kept it invisible by shifting it into another dimension, but Jetfire had been able to retrieve it. Having heard enough, Megatron orders the Decepticons to attack.
After the beginnings of a fierce battle, Optimus Prime unexpectedly calls a retreat and the other Autobots bug out after him, leaving the Decepticons to enter the ship and claim their prize. Laserbeak notices that there are no controls within the ship, but before they can react, the doors slam shut around them and it takes off, heading into space.
On the ground below, the Autobots chuckle about how easily they deceived the Decepticons into boarding the fake ship and how it will be a while before they see them again.

Errors
[edit]- Starscream is "manoverable".
- Starscream and Megatron's eyes are said to meet while the latter is still in tank mode.
- The tense switches from past to present sometimes.
- Table Mountain is once referred to as "Table Top Mountain".
- Given that this is Slipstream's only appearance, he is most likely a misspelling of "Speedstream".
- Laserbeak is misspelled "Lazerbeak".
- The "victor's" enter the ship.
Items of note
[edit]- It's difficult to reconcile this story with any previous continuity except that established by "From Cybertron to Earth the War Continues...", the annual's introduction.
- Megatron has "back shoulder senses".
- This is Shockwave's only appearance in any Generation 2 fiction anywhere, unless you count his cameo as a severed head in "Games of Deception". It's possible that he was meant to be Soundwave.
- This story is illustrated mostly with recycled package art, as seen above, as well as the same crappy Optimus Prime pic that they used to illustrate "From Cybertron to Earth the War Continues..." just five pages previously.
