Hoist uses an unfair advantage to win a search game, allowing him to choose the location for the next Sim Exercise. He picks the Old West, and as the Recruits search for gold, Hoist learns that winning isn't everything.

Synopsis

[edit]

As one of the events in the academy's "Search-a-thon", Blades has the recruits literally hunting for a needle in a haystack. Hot Shot is taken aback when Whirl grabs an electromagnet, but Blades says it's allowed, and thus Whirl finds the needle and wins. Blades tallies the scores—only Hoist hasn't scored in an event yet. The next search will be the hardest, and so whoever successfully completes it will win the overall Search-a-thon, the prize being to select the location of their next sim exercise. Blades plans to hide Tough Luck Chuck somewhere in Griffin Rock, tasking the recruits with finding him. The recruits all have ideas about what sim they'll pick, but as their teacher departs though the GroundBridge, Chuck drops a crumpled piece of paper which Hoist realizes is a map showing where Chuck's to be hidden.

With Chuck hidden, Blades flies the recruits over the island so they can attempt to spot Chuck from the air, before dropping them off. Hoist is naturally able to drive straight to where Chuck is, and after some debate with himself, decides it's no different than Whirl using the electromagnet. The other recruits are impressed, and Blades starts up the Old West sim chosen by Hoist. Blades introduces them to simulated prospector Goldpan Pete who explains they're hunting for gold, though his suggestion they use dynamite is quickly shot down by the teacher. Blades promises whoever collects the most gold will win a week off from chore duty.

The recruits all start hunting for gold, but Hoist finds himself having little success and begins doubting his earlier actions. Blades triggers the "game changer", an explosion that brings down part of the mountain on Goldpan Pete. When Whirl suggests they search from the air like before, Hoist admits to her that he cheated when hunting for Chuck. The other recruits arrive and the search commences. Whirl spots Pete, directing Hoist to his location for a rescue. Pete goes to present Hoist with a hoard of gold nuggets but Hoist turns the prize down, suggesting it should go to Whirl instead, and confesses to the other recruits he cheated earlier. The others assure Hoist he's a valued member of the team, and he decides though he didn't win the gold hunt, he won by virtue of his friends.

Notes

[edit]

Continuity notes

[edit]
  • Wedge's pick for a sim would have been anything from "Bumblebee's greatest hits", his Bumblebee fanboy status being well established by this point.
  • Hoist previously showed a liking for the Old West back in "Driving a Wedge".
