</table> The truth behind the Autobots' downfall revealed!

Synopsis

One year ago on Cybertron, the Swarm are trying to claw free in a sealed room, while Megatron and the Seekers walk toward an experimental lab. Thundercracker accuses Megatron of using the Swarm as a kind of sick, twisted torture against their own kind, but Megatron stares at him, then walks away with Starscream, leaving the other two behind. After being admitted to the lab by Deluge, Megatron talks to one of the Insecticons. Megatron asks for his name, and the Insecticon replies "Bombshell". Megatron asks him where he is, to which he replies "Cybertron". Megatron then asks why he was created. The answer: "Torment." This brings a smile to Megatron, who says that there's someone who wants to meet him...

On present-day Cybertron, Kup asks Jazz to relate what happened "from the beginning"...

The Autobot and Decepticon front lines had been redrawn, but it had become a stalemate, with the two sides struggling for a way to tip the balance. They laid low, with no signs of manipulation or facsimiles anywhere. Then, the Autobots got a break: Mirage delivered news of an apparent "power play" between Megatron and Starscream that was verified by other sources. Waiting outside, the Autobots prepared themselves for what they assumed to be just Starscream and a handful of other Decepticons. However, the Autobots were outnumbered and caught off-balance, and the Decepticons were strongly unified. The Autobots regrouped, but it was short-lived when Devastator tipped the scales in the Decepticons' favor. Every Autobot was soundly defeated, and the culmination came when Megatron ripped the Matrix of Leadership from Prime's chest...

Kup asks for a break in the story as they make a stop. With any luck, they could make it back without the Swarm behind them. However, Kup notices that the Autobots' trust is slipping and morale is down. He isn't sure what they're trying to outrun: the Swarm or themselves. Inside a small building, Sideswipe tries to talk to Sunstreaker, but Sunstreaker wants to be left alone and is not interested in talking to him. Sideswipe tells him and Ironhide to stop acting like idiots, because it's just making things worse. He realizes that his brother hasn't been the same since the Headmaster incident. They managed to reverse the process that bonded Sunstreaker with Hunter O'Nion, but Sunstreaker turned his back on Hunter. Sunstreaker gets very angry at this, insisting that his actions had nothing to do with that and that he doesn't ever, EVER want to bring it up again, then walks off.

Meanwhile, Jazz continues his story...

The Decepticons were gloating at them, laughing. Prime was damaged very badly, but not as bad as when the Autobots were told that they'd been betrayed by one of their own. They were shocked, but Prime took the news particularly badly. The Insecticons had built a wormhole-like portal (Kup mentions that they were trying to build something like that, too), and all the Autobots were to be dropped through. Two Decepticons, Dirge and Deluge, went through, followed by most of the Autobots, but Optimus Prime, summoning a bit of willpower, fought back and sabotaged the machine. It almost killed him, but it saved the Autobots' lives and sent them to Cybertron. The Autobots turned on and presumably killed Dirge and Deluge, but they were trapped with no Energon and no way off of Cybertron, so they hid. The electromagnetic storms were getting better, making the planet semi-habitable, but walking around the planet still caused pain, making things worse.

Ironhide notices Sunstreaker storming off and stops him. Ironhide asks him what's wrong, and Sunstreaker mentions Sideswipe's attempt to talk to him. Sunstreaker believes that, with Mirage trying to divide the group, he took things too far. However, Ironhide becomes really angry about it, and, finally having enough, tells Sunstreaker to follow him. Ironhide grabs Mirage and starts releasing his pent-up fury against him. Sunstreaker tries to stop him, but Ironhide's anger overwhelms him as he punches Mirage hard. Mirage tries to explain that he overheard Starscream, that he was a scout, and that he's an Autobot just like Ironhide. Ironhide continues to punch, retorting that Mirage doesn't deserve to wear the Autobot symbol, as it's his fault that Prime is in his current condition. Mirage tries to say that it wasn't him, but Ironhide kicks him and walks off, much to the shock of the Autobots present.

Errors

  • In the first panel on page 2, Thundercracker and Skywarp's colors are swapped.
  • In the flashback sequences, Cliffjumper is missing the checkerboard patterns on his arms.
  • The portal led to Cybertron, where the Swarm was. Prime's actions closed the portal, leaving the Autobots stuck there with no way out (and presumably the Decepticons were going to close it too). How did that save them?

Items of note

  • E.J. Su drew the flashback sequences for this issue.
  • On page 6, in the first panel, a non-working lamppost is an homage to Soundwave's Cybertronian alt mode from "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1".
  • Once again, Dirge carries on the tradition of dying in pretty much every continuity he appears in. Someone must be reading this Wiki...
  • Deluge is a character from the 1990s. And yet he's in this comic! And because Shane specifically wrote him in! <a href="http://tfarchive.com/community/showpost.php?p=643920&postcount=12" class="external autonumber" title="http://tfarchive.com/community/showpost.php?p=643920&postcount=12" rel="nofollow">[1]</a> Damn!
  • This is the first issue of the series to attempt to rectify some of the continuity issues with Simon Furman's work. Facsimiles are briefly mentioned, as is the environmental damage Cybertron suffered from Thunderwing (with a mention Cybertron is slowly healing); Sunstreaker's tenure as a Headmaster is a major point; the bitter rivalry between him and Sideswipe is also mentioned and dealt with; and flashbacks include Abraham Dante and Hunter O'Nion. The environmental damage reference, annoyingly, involves the omnipresent electromagnetic storms vanishing just in time for the Autobots to be stuck there, and accepting they've been walking around in pain without mentioning it at all.
  • The flashbacks show that, post-Revelation, the Autobots and Decepticons on Earth had both bolstered their numbers considerably.
  • The Decepticons had a facility on Cybertron at the same time.
  • The ambush in the flashbacks revolves around Optimus Prime (as well as two unit commanders) thinking it would be a good idea to send the entire Autobot force after a handful of Decepticons, in an enclosed space, with no back-up or decision to orbital-bounce away when the battle went south. (And Prime did! Dang!)
  • Apparently, the Insecticons were created following Revelation, in spite of Bombshell being with the Decepticons as far back as just before Cybertron became uninhabitable and Kickback being around at the very beginning of the war.
