Synopsis

The Fallen ordered Megatron to find Sam Witwicky and bring him the Matrix of Leadership. Megatron Agreed.

Seymour Simmons and Leo Spitz decided to stay in their place of relative safety with Skids and Mudflap but to keep their eye out for an opportunity to help. The Twins then agreed they were totally and majorly screwed.

Sam and Mikaela Banes were still running from Starscream when they were found by Rampage who was holding Sam's parents hostage.

William Lennox and Robert Epps wondered why the United States military was not sending help, figuring they could see the conflict from satellites. However, satellite images continued to be disrupted by Soundwave.

Some Constructicons formed Devastator.

Sam was about to trade the sock full of Matrix dust to Rampage in exchange for his parents when Bumblebee showed up and defeated Rampage with his bare hands. Bumblebee drove Ron Witwicky and Judy Witwicky to safety just before Megatron opened fire on Sam and Mikaela, missing.

The Fallen downed a couple of American helicopters with the wave of his hand. One helicopter was completely destroyed but the other was able to make a crash landing. Simmons borrowed its radio. While Devastator began demolishing a pyramid exposing a harvester, Simmons reached a nearby US Naval destroyer on the radio. Simmons tells the captain to prepare his prototype rail gun and be ready to fire it when he gives him the coordinates. The captain briefly argued about security clearance but Simmon's persuasive personality convinced him.

An unmanned aerial vehicle was finally able to get images back to the US military and they sent a tank battalion led by General Salam into the fray. Sam and Mikaela were pinned down by Megatron near Lennox's position when the tanks arrived. Lennox ordered the tanks to give covering fire and Sam and Mikaela were reunited with Lennox. Long Haul arrived barreling down on their position. Before he could run all the humans over, Jetfire swooped down and destroyed Long Haul with one shot. US planes were entering the area on a bombing run, so Lennox and Mikaela ran to safety. Sam instead ran to Optimus Prime. Scorponok appeared out of the sand and stabbed Jetfire through the chest. Sam arrived at Optimus Prime's body when an explosion knocked him unconscious.

Sam's heart was stopped, and he had a vision of the Dynasty of Primes, which told Sam that he has proven his leadership ability and they gave him stewardship of the Matrix. Sam was resuscitated by a medic. He poured the Matrix out of his sock and reformed itself into a solid artifact. Sam jabbed the Matrix into Optimus Prime's spark, reanimating him. Having apparently gained knowledge through the Matrix, Prime woke up wanting to know where he can find The Fallen.

The Fallen teleported to where Sam was, stole the Matrix through telepathy, shoved a couple of Autobots out of the way with a wave of his hand and teleported away. Optimus Prime declared he was still not in shape to face The Fallen, so a dying Jetfire offered his chassis for parts. Ratchet then performed a field refit of Optimus, installing Jetfire to him, forming a makeshift super mode.

Simmons made his way under Devastator's feet and told the destroyer captain to fire the rail gun directly above his position. This was a direct hit and Devastator was destroyed. Optimus Prime then went on the offensive, and took out the harvester. Optimus Prime claimed that there can only be one Prime, but Megatron objected, calling him a liar because The Fallen promised the power of the Primes to him. Optimus informed Megatron that he was deceived by The Fallen before he removed one of his arms and one of his legs.

The Fallen opened up a portal in preparation for a retreat, but took too long in his farewell monologue because, at that moment, a bundle of animated barbed-wire appeared from off-panel to tangle him up (???). The Fallen begged Megatron for help, but Megatron instead used the portal to escape to the Nemesis. Optimus then finished off The Fallen by driving a spike through his head.

Later, the humans and Autobots were on the U.S.S. Roosevelt celebrating their victory. Sam said the symbols in his head were gone, and Optimus told him that the knowledge had passed to him, and they were all that were left of Cybertronian heritage. Optimus was grateful to Sam for keeping the information safe. Sam asked about the future and Optimus gave a speech about facing it together.

Megatron was then back on the Nemesis with all of his limbs. He was busy raising a new army from stasis pods located there.

Errors

Items of note

  • Both Rampage and Long Haul are active individually while Devastator is formed. Judging by the number of incoming comet Decepticons in the last issue, there were plenty of Decepticons on the scene for Devastator to be formed without them, so this isn't an error.
  • Josh Nizzi's cover for this issue is a modified version of his rejected cover for Defiance issue 4 (rejected because, at the time, director Michael Bay and Dreamworks/Paramount Pictures wanted to keep Megatron's return a "secret".) The main difference is the photoshopping of a stock image of The Fallen into the background.
