A Global Orbital Defense Satellite is a weapon of mass destruction in the Shattered Glass continuity family.

The Global Orbital Defense Satellites are weapons commissioned by President Colton as the ultimate defense for the United States of America. The satellites are equipped with a 10.8 exawatt laser system that can vaporize any target on or underneath the surface of the Earth, with high-precision aiming capability. The main control transmitter for the satellites is located at the Burpleson Air Force Base.

Shattered Glass

After learning about the Global Orbital Defense Satellite's deployment from a presidential bulletin, Rodimus set out to find out what military base was controlling it so he could hijack it. He and the Autobots then launched a successful attack to overtake the base and thus gain control of the satellite.

Rodimus then made a broadcast to Earth of his demands that the world leaders submit to paying the dues of his "protection racket". As a demonstration of what they needed protection from, he used the satellite's beam to blow up the Statue of Liberty, and threatened that similar "withdrawals of protection" would occur unless his demands were met.

After hearing this message, the Decepticons launched their own mission to free the base. Heatwave made his way to the base's roof to communicate with the main Defense Satellite transmitter located there, while the others infiltrated the base to block the Autobots and soldiers from using the base's computers to interfere.

Heatwave found the transmitter to be "friendly", and was able to convince it that the base had been hijacked by hostiles. He had the transmitter tell the base's computer to open and evacuate the base, then turn the satellite on the base itself once everyone was clear, completely destroying it. He then crushed the transmitter itself and tossed it into the flaming wreckage of the base.

After the base and transmitter were destroyed, the satellite's self-destruct mechanism was activated, causing it to re-enter and burn up in Earth's atmosphere. President Colton was eager to get more of the satellites online, despite Vice President Clay's worries about international retaliation or the Soviets building their own satellites to complete.
