Devil's Due Press, formerly an in-house arm of Image Comics, broke off on its own in 2003. Its primary success at the time was the relaunch of the G.I. Joe comic book series in 2001. That series continued the continuity established in the old Marvel G.I. Joe comic, while eschewing the links to Transformers that it contained. However, Devil's Due did produce a Transformers crossover series in the form of several miniseries set in a fresh, unique new universe. The second of these minis featured the art of E. J. Su, who would later become the main penciler on IDW's Transformers series.
