The Transformers who would become the Ancient Decepticons, including Thunderblast and Lugnutz, came to Earth during the space bridge project hundreds of years ago and became stranded there. Presumably, these Transformers are the same who inhabited the starship Atlantis and left artifacts discovered by Dr. Lucy Suzuki.
Their sparks somehow became disembodied but still corporeal and resembled monstrous beasts. They ran amok in these forms, terrifying humans. Thus many of the monsters of myth and legend were really these ancient Decepticons! They were opposed by Evac and Crosswise, who over the course of many years imprisoned them in stasis pods, which they stored in an underground chamber near the North Pole.
Thousands of years later, Starscream discovered this chamber and destroyed the sealing device keeping them in stasis. The ancient sparks took their "true Decepti-forms" at Starscream's urging, and he adopted them as his personal army to oppose the Autobots and attempt to track down Earth's Cyber Planet Key. Trap However, they were quickly defeated and re-sealed. Assault
Later, Evac would free the Ancient Decepticons, whom he convinced to help him battle Galvatron. This apparently earned them their freedom, as they were later seen joining the new space bridge project.

- The Ancient Decepticons' story shares a few notable similarities to that of the Decepticon Pretenders in the Super-God Masterforce cartoon.
