A splinter timeline is a universal stream that has split off from a pre-existing universal stream. In these cases, the originating continuity can look like a tree, with tiny branches signifying distinct and unreconcilable storyline directions.

An example is the Marvel UK text story "Another Time and Place," which is one possible ending to the Marvel Comics continuity. There are two others, namely the Generation 2 comics and the Classics stories. In the case of "Another Time and Place," it was physically replaced by the Classics splinter timeline due to a cataclysmic event. Whether all splinter timelines are this unstable or volatile is a subject open to debate.
