All of the recounts of the Ark's and Nemesis' crash to Earth by both Megatron and Optimus (complete with the 'flashback' during Optimus' retelling) clearly state that the Nemesis shot down the Ark in a grand space battle. However, in More than Meets the Eye, Part 1 and Marvel's interpretation of the battle, both ships are grounded by gravitational distortions from Earth disrupting their orbits, while they are both tethered together by a tractor beam. This would account for why Megatron and the other Decepticons are on the Ark; the tractor beam was there to secure the Ark while they boarded. However, there was a firefight between the Autobots and Decepticons inside the Ark that may have contributed to the ship's orbit's destablization, but this isn't confirmed either way in the G1 continuity. It is interesting to note that the retellings by Optimus and Megatron are stated as 'myths', meaning that the truth of what happened back then was lost in time, but this makes no sense, either, as it's been confirmed that Transformers who were involved in the Ark/Nemesis battle (like Ravage) are still around and functional during the Beast Era, meaning that such a gross mistranslation of those events would be nigh-impossible, unless purposely suppressed (which, considering the Maximal Elders' designating Earth as off-limits, is a possibility).
