Ghosts of Yesterday prequel novel

Conncarry was one of the techs involved in Sector Seven's Ghost 1 project, communicating with the ship from the Sector Seven base. After the ship ended up in a distant star system, among alien forces, and the crew told they should prepare to sacrifice themselves if necessary, Conncarry attempted to keep the communication channels open. He reported to communications director Christolph Smythe that they'd lost contact. Smythe told him to try pinging the ship, and if it responded, to pass on authorization to attempt a return journey to Earth. The ping succeeded, and the authorization was dutifully sent, but the ship never returned. Ghosts of Yesterday
