The universe is the sum total of all that exists. The core of the universe is sentient. However, there are untold numbers of other universes differing from each other at wildly varying levels.

Unicron consumed every planet, galaxy, and very nearly all the stuff that existed in the old realms leaving only the void. The tiny leftover fragments that he missed reacted in an explosion that created the universe. The sentient core of the universe sensed that Unicron was a threat to its existence, so it created Primus to oppose him. The Void!
