The AllSpark Almanac II

DJW DerrickJWyatt Let me tell you a story:

Near the end of the Great War the Autobots came up with two strategies to win the conflict. One, of course, was Project Omega. The other was to be a massive surge of Autobots, using all the protoforms that had been created and stored in Yoketron's dojo. Unfortunately for the Autobots, Megatron learned of the planned surge, and sent Lockdown, a former pupil of Yoketron's, to capture as many protoforms as he could, and turn them over to Megatron. Fortunately for the Autobots, Project Omega was a success, and they were not forced to use that back up plan. A small fraction of the protoforms were not stolen. These would become one of the last generations of Autobots (until the Allspark was recovered) in modern times. Among these protoforms were the bots that would become designated Bumblebee, and Bulkhead.

During the Great War, energon reserves were massively depleted. Energon farms were primary targets of the Decepticons. After the War, fuel was scarce, so it was decided by the council that for every one large Autobot (like Bulkhead) there would have to be many smaller, much more fuel efficient models, such as Bumblebee. These newer, smaller models could run on the fuel from one energon cube for Earth weeks at a time. This gave the Autobots time to rebuild new energon farms, so that Cybertron society could return to it's former glory. Even now, energy conservation is a very important part of Autobot society. Some farms are up and running again, but it is doubtful that they will ever be able to return to pre-war levels.
