The Double Pretenders were to be Transformers from the Generation 1 continuity family.

"Double Pretenders" are a type of Pretenders that has two robots, capable of combining into one robot, in one Pretender shell.

Unreleased

Hasbro at one point had plans to release a Pretender subgroup consisting of a combiner pair inside one shell. There are two prototype shells known to exist, one of a spider creature and the other of an armored gorilla. Whether the Transformers that were to go in them were ever given prototypes is unknown, and any artwork on them has yet to surface. The two shells, meanwhile, each have been spotted in two color schemes. The spider creature has a black and a brown deco, and the armored gorilla a brown and a grey deco. The black spider creature and grey armored gorilla were first and last seen at a display at BotCon 1996.

The shells are of the same size as the 1989 normal Pretenders. Unlike most other Pretenders, it seems the Double Pretenders were to be opened at the back to insert or remove the inner robots, rather than down the middle.

Notes

  • In an interview, Vinnie D'Alleva referred to these Pretenders as the "Monster Pretenders". Whether that was actually supposed to be their name or if D'Alleva got them confused with the other Pretender combiner group is not clear.
  • Speaking of that other group, there's a number of similarities between the Pretender Monsters and the Double Pretenders that makes it seem the concept of the Double Pretenders was revived in the Pretender Monsters. Both groups have combiners as the inner robots, have nonhumanoid monsters as shells and split open at the back.
