Gilbert Poole is a boy aged around twelve who lives in Hurley's Crossing. He collects action figures and baseball cards, all of which make his bedroom extremely cluttered. He has a sister named Charlene.

He and his friend Kevin attempted to work on an idea for a science project, but were hampered by the fact that his sister's boyfriend, Douglas Porter, had decided to throw a loud birthday party for her. When they realized that their planned project to cover the movement of the stars lacked the practical application portion of the assignment, Gilbert suggested they explore how "psychics and astronomers" used the stars to predict the future. Not getting any work done, they opted to go and get some food. It was that point that Gilbert noticed the giant robot story on the news. When Kevin subsequently got into an argument with Douglas over the veracity of the reports, Gilbert tried unsuccessfully to calm matters, and Kevin left. Switching Gears
