Stasis hibernation pods are a technology from the Wings Universe portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
They also fill plotholes!

Stasis hibernation pods are exactly what their name implies. They put a Transformer into a temporary slumber and deactivate their energy signatures. The pods can be a convenient way to stave off energy depletion.

Fiction

Wings Universe

Following the disappearance of the Ark, it appeared that the energy crisis on Cybertron would inevitably bring all life to an eventual halt. To help await the return of energy resources to their planet, Alpha Trion prepared stasis hibernation pods for much of the Autobot forces on Cybertron, leaving only Cybertron Defense members active in the scattered war. The pods would scan the planet for energy, and if enough energy resources returned to Cybertron, the pods would reactivate their inhabitants. Battle Lines, Part 6

Notes

  • The hibernation pods are a means of explaining where the 1985 Autobots were during the first season of the cartoon, as well as why Kup, who seemed to actually be younger than the 1984/85 cast in Wings Universe, was so much older than them in the future. Presumably, the Decepticons returning energy to Cybertron via the space bridge in 1984 would alert the pods, and Perceptor, the 1986 Autobot Cars, and the Female Autobots would awaken.
  • It is not certain whether this also explains the Cybertonium plothole in "Desertion of the Dinobots" or complicates it further. Probably depends on how the pods work. They wouldn't be very good stasis pods if they didn't supply a necessary element to keep Transformers from deactivating...
  • On the other hand, this would mean Perceptor and the 1985 Autobot Cars know Elita One and the Female Autobots are alive. Optimus Prime's uncertainty as to whether Elita One survived the Ark's launch is a new wrinkle in the story. He should know, unless those slumbering Autobots were jerks.
  • Side Burn is not physically seen getting into or being within a pod. It's possible, if the story is taken at face value, that he could be one of the "Cybertron Defense" members, along with Kup and Thunderclash, who stay awake to guard the pods and continue the war. However, Pete Sinclair has stated online that Side Burn was indeed a hibernator.
