Magmatron initializes his plans to build an army to conquer Cybertron, and the Maximal Razorbeast must stop him. Sounds familiar!

Synopsis

Magmatron and his crew of Predacons (including the undercover Razorbeast), set foot near the crashed Nemesis on Earth. Magmatron boasts that he will build an army with the abandoned Maximal protoforms, and assures that no interference occurs by having Drill Bit sabotage the Autobot shuttle transporting Optimus Primal's Maximals and Megatron with a transwarp agitator. Having the authorities on Cybertron mount a rescue mission won't do. Realizing Waspinator is absent, Magmatron sends Transquito to take care of him. Razorbeast is put in charge of the activation signal meant to convert the Maximal protoforms into new Predacon warriors. On the side, he tries to alert one of the Maximals on the Autobot shuttle.

On the shuttle, Rattrap awakes, having just experienced an interesting dream. The other Maximals decide to rib him on the contents of his dream. Primal suddenly decides to recount the events of the Beast Wars to people who have already lived through it. The Maximals decide to take a well-deserved rest, but Rattrap seemingly begins to hallucinate the presence of unknown Maximals and being on Earth. The unknown Maximals take an angry tone with Rattrap, accusing him of abandoning them and promising that Rattrap would get to know them. Rattrap is still on the shuttle the whole time, and the other Maximals think he's losing his mind. As Rattrap is unceremoniously dumped in a CR chamber, the transwarp portal the shuttle is entering suddenly beings to fluctuate.

On Earth, Magmatron thinks back to a meeting with the Tri-Predacus Council about the transwarp wavefront hidden from the Maximals and their sending of an agent to handle the "renegade". After the meeting with the Council ended, Magmatron mocked the slow-moving triumvirate and received planetary scans from the agent. Razorback too flashes back, but this time to his meeting with Lio Convoy, ordering him to go undercover in Magmatron's inner circle.

On the Autobot shuttle, the Maximals begin to make antagonistic moves against Rattrap. Rattrap, in an attempt to escape the Maximals, runs into hallucinations of the unknown Maximals, who plead with him to go back to Earth. On the exterior of the shuttle, the Transwarp fluctuations allow Megatron to begin breaking free of his magno-clamp bonds.

On Earth, the activation signal is sent, and protoforms all around the world are awakened. But as some reveal themselves to be Predacon, other reveal themselves to be still Maximals. Magmatron, realizing the cause, can only look on while Razorbeast runs for his life.

Rattrap, on the shuttle, causes a malfunction in the transwarp drive, sending the shuttle and its occupants back to Earth. Optimus Primal is understandably furious, but must cut his rant short when it's revealed that Megatron is now free!

Notes

  • Shell Game #1 was never released, as Dreamwave Productions declared bankruptcy before the issue was released.
  • As may be obvious, the plot of this issue was recycled for IDW Publishing's The Gathering #1. The key differences are that the television show cast are very less involved in the plot of The Gathering and that The Gathering takes place during the cartoon instead of after.
  • Simon Furman's first draft script for Shell Game #1 was made available by the writer himself and is what the synopsis in this article is based on.
  • Due to Dreamwave's bankruptcy the numerous plot points set up here are all left unanswered such as the fates of Waspinator and Razorbeast, Rattrap's visions, Magmatron's grand schemes, and how the Maximals got back to Cybertron.
