Issue #1 The comic is set an in-determinant amount of time after the departure of Optimus Prime and Megatron from Cybertron. The Dinobots are in an Autobot ship convoy, lead by Ultra Magnus, which is fleeing Decepticon pursuit. While the Dinobots cover the retreat of the other ships in the convoy, Magnus' fighter is shot down on the planet. The Dinobots decide to check the wreck and ensure that Magnus survived. Meanwhile, the Forged, a Decepticon subgroup lead by Ser-Ket, also send their forces to find Ultra Magnus and the Dinobots. The Dinobots find the wreck and are disturbed to find it guarded by a Predacon, a dragon-like creature long thought to be extinct. Sensing the handiwork of their nemesis, Shockwave, the Dinobots fight against the beast, Grimlock tearing into it in beast mode. However, once its beaten, Grimlock goes into a berserker rage and attacks Snarl. In the chaos, the Predacon revives and captures Swoop. The Predacon, Backbite brings Swoop to the Forged, where Ser-ket reveals to their leader that they have Ultra Magnus and he is ready for "re-forging". Their leader is Shockwave.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
Four members of the Lightning Strike Coalition were captured by Shockwave (while the fifth one was left in stasis lock) after repelling his Insecticon hordes and re-engineered to become much more powerful and transform into alternate forms that resembled creatures he discovered on a distant planet. Though four of the team escaped captivity, renaming themselves the "Dinobots". The Dinobots also found schematics for a new body for Sludge as well, but these were ultimately never used.
