The mode lock is a restraining device from the Marvel Comics portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The mode lock is a handy way to restrain a prisoner. When affixed, it prevents the affected Transformer from transforming out of their alt mode or taking any independent action except speaking. It also can be tracked to a radius of 50,000 miles. A mode locked Transformer can be controlled by radio.

Fiction

Marvel Comics

The Protectobots used a mode lock on the captured "renegade" Blaster to safely transport him back to the Ark. An unexpected encounter with the Combaticons allowed Blaster the chance to convince some humans to remove it and save their lives. After his heroism convinced Hot Spot to let him go free, the mode lock was used to restrain Blast Off to take the humans on a joyride in space. Child's Play

Skids awoke on a mysterious shuttle with a mode lock placed on its controls and watched as the lock deactivated and the shuttle began to transform. Acting on instinct, he reactivated the lock and let the shuttle crash into the planet below, where it turned out to have been the combined form of three Legislators. Hangers On
