The name or term "Dinobot" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Dinobot (disambiguation).
The Dinobots are a subgroup from the Beast Machines portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
"Everyone a little to the left — no, MY left. Oh, whatever."

The Dinobots were created by the Oracle to aid in the battle against Megatron's Vehicons. At his death, the Maximal Dinobot's spark, containing all the data gathered in his life, had joined with the Allspark and so was available to the Oracle.

The Oracle reformatted a group of survivors of Megatron's virus and Vehicon hordes using dinosaur DNA information from Dinobot, giving them new technorganic bodies. And with the addition of the spacefaring Predacon warrior Magmatron, the new Dinobots were born.

CALL OF THE PRIMITIVES
In a desperate attempt to combat Megatron's techno-organic virus on Cybertron, the Oracle supercomputer reformatted a group of surviving Transformers, rendering them immune to the plague and extremely powerful. Having the DNA schematics of former Maximals Dinobot, each warrior emerged as a hybrid of savage prehistoric power and advanced Cybertronian robotics. The result: the fearsome Dinobots are born!

Toys

What the hell kind of Triceratops looks like this?!
The Dinobots subline was released alongside the Beast Machines toyline, in similarly-designed packaging. It consists entirely of redecos of existing toy molds, and brings together almost every prehistoric beast design from the Beast Wars and Beast Wars Neo toylines (most of the handful of prehistoric creature molds that weren't included would show up in the Wal-mart Dinobots line soon after). Many of the Neo molds were seeing their first release in Hasbro markets.
The molds are generally complex ones, typical of the Beast Era. Their mixed heritage means that while some are "realistic" organically-styled dinosaurs, others are mechanical interpretations of their beast forms.

Notes

  • Dinobot's DNA being used to create the Dinobots is information from their packaging writeups. How the Oracle used Dinobot's velociraptor DNA to create a wide variety of dinosaur (and flying reptile) Transformers is unknown.
