He looked as grizzled as he sounded.

Seizō Katō (加藤 精三 Katō Seizō), born February 14, 1927 in Tokyo, was a veteran Japanese voice actor who worked for Haikyo. Some of his most notable roles include Count Magnus Lee from Vampire Hunter D, Dr. Barcas from The Guyver, Gamo Whiskey on Cyborg 009, Hazanko on Outlaw Star, Kristopher McLaughlin in Case Closed, Alien Mephilas from Ultra Series, Father Cornello on FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Mother in Tokyo Godfather, Grim Reaper Earl Bolstak in Trigun, Great Satan/Lokar on Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (which would later be used as the basis of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Shere Khan in the Japanese dub of The Jungle Book, Master Control Program in Tron, Dr. Herbert Higginbotham in Little Big Planet 2 and a one-off stint as Inspector Zenigata in Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy.

Katō died of complications from bladder cancer on January 17, 2014 at the age of 86.[1]

Notes

  • Katō voluntarily turned down the role of Megatron from the 2007 Transformers film and the part was given to Kōtarō Nakamura, instead. Katō cited, "I no longer have the same level of confidence as I did then," as his reasoning.[2]
  • Despite retiring from the role, Katō would deign to play a parody of Megatron called "Mesutron" (Femmetron) in episode 7 of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. When one hears the age in his voice, they can see why he declined the opportunity to continue playing Megatron (he was 80 at the time). Tesshō Genda played a parody of Optimus Prime named "Osutimus Surprise" (Masculus Surprise) in that same episode.[3]
