Brown Gyro

Brown Gyro is a Beastformer from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Brown Gyro (ブラウンジャイロ Buraun Jairo) was considered a creep and a bully even among Alligatron's forces. A quiet loner, he had a tendency to lash out with violence at the slightest frustration, driving others away. And it's not like he could be beaten into submission; his armored hide is thousands of times tougher than steel, so physical blows bounce off with incredible force that can send even the heaviest attacker flying away. Thus, he was generally given wide berth, left to sulk alone when not in battle.

That all changed following the war, when he encountered the Autobot-allied Wavemoose, King of their home island Ellas. The easygoing, patient Wavemoose took the time to listen, slowly working with Gyro to, well, soften him up and help him come out of his shell. Though he's still a quiet sort, his anger has abated dramatically and his confidence has risen, and he now serves as Emperor of Ellas, protecting its peaceful people from harm.

In battle, Gyro is incredibly slow, but he's also very, very hard to stop. If he gets in close, he can spin his Gyrodor (ジャイローダー Jairōdā) double-blade at super-high speed, turning it into a buzzsaw to carve up anything within reach.

Toys

Transformers: Beastformers

[edit]
(Hasbro version pictured, Takara version was not released during the time when full-color rubsigns were added.)
  • Brown Gyro (Beastformer, 1987)
  • Pack: C
  • ID number: 30
  • Accessories: Double-bladed weapon (usually)
Part of the second series of Takara's Beastformers toys, Brown Gyro is an anthopomorphic armadillo in magenta robotic armor. The Battle Emblem on his chest reveals one of three symbols when warmed up; Fire, Water or Wood.
He usually comes with a gold double-bladed weapon marked with the same ID number as on his back. However, Beastformers is notorious for toys coming with someone else's weapon; it's unclear if this was just originally poor QC, but in the sequel series, this semi-random weaponry was actually turned into a "gimmick".
He was only available in the "C Pack" assortment, and came in a green-grid generic "Destron Beastformer" box. He came with a bio card with a painted character image on a jungle backdrop, though there was a chance his bio card would instead be replaced with the rare "Secret Photo" card featuring White Leo.

Merchandise

Meiji candy toys

[edit]

  • Ramune Beastformers Battle Card (1988)
    • Meiji ID number: 34
A gold-foil "Battle Card" of Brown Gyro, featuring his painted character art from his original bio card (seen at the top of this page), was available in randomly-packed sets of cards that came with ramune-flavored candy tablets, sold by candy/snack company Meiji, during the post-Transformers "RPG" sequel series. The back of the card features a severely truncated bio, with data for the game from the Meiji chocoball SD figures' packaging.
While the cardback shows line-art of an SD-styled Brown Gyro toy, no such toy was actually produced.

Notes

[edit]
  • Brown Gyro's comic-style character art used on the large Beastformers character poster (all the same art used on the Hasbro Battle Beasts version of the poster) gives him a weird silver trident weapon that doesn't really line up with any known Beastformers weapon. This would be corrected for his 1988 character art.
  • As he was not sold in the post-Transformers sequel series and thus had no bio card, his "RPG"-era bio comes from the Hero Special 4: Beastformers mook. This bio gives him the nickname "Gy" (ジャイ Jai).
  • Brown Gyro appears on the pack-in mini-pamphlet for the "RPG"-era Beastformers Gacha capsule-toys releases, the only toy who wasn't part of that series to show up on the paperwork. But it has not been confirmed if he was actually released this way, and odds are not very good we're going to ever know for sure, given the rarity of still-sealed Gacha Beastformers.
