Synopsis

As you lay in bed, Optimus Prime greets you, thanking you for once again giving him and his allies, Bumblebee and Ironhide, a place to rest and recharge their energy cells. As it happens, the offer couldn't have come at a better time. Optimus explains that the three of them spent the day assisting with recovery and reconstruction efforts following heavy flooding, which had caused a bridge in the area to collapse. With the bridge repaired and all the people safe, they needed a place to rest after hours spent on the road. Bumblebee suggested a truck stop or rest area, while Ironhide proposed a wrecking yard or parking lot. Though both suggestions had merit, the two began to argue, each unwilling to budge from their stance. Optimus notes to himself that while differences of opinion can be good, as they make individuals unique, Bumblebee and Ironhide might have been able to come to a decision more quickly if they had actually talked things out instead of arguing. Fortunately, it was at that moment that you contacted Optimus and offered the Autobots a place to stay, pleasing both Bumblebee and Ironhide and immediately defusing the argument, something which Optimus is very grateful for. Talking of his friends and their disagreements reminds Optimus of a story from his past, which he begins to tell...

Millions of years ago, during Cybertron's Golden Age, Optimus worked as a data clerk at the Hall of Records in Iacon, analyzing and archiving data from across the planet. One day, Optimus received a visit from Jetfire, a scientist whom Optimus knew only by reputation. Jetfire requested construction data for the Benevolous Bridge, a pedestrian bridge connecting the Alpha Preserve park to the residental complex where Optimus lived. When asked by Optimus what he needed it for, Jetfire explained that the Iacon City Building Council had tasked him with dismantling the bridge due to its superstructure weakening, putting it at imminent risk of collapse. When Optimus asked if the bridge would be replaced, Jetfire declared there was no need, and that flying bots would still be able to visit the park without issue. Optimus protested, noting that all bots should be able to freely visit the park regardless of their alternate mode, and offered to help him gather new materials and rebuild the bridge together. After a moment, Jetfire apologized, agreeing that everyone should be able to enjoy the park, and agreed to allow Optimus to help him with reconstruction.

With the Council's approval, Optimus and Jetfire began working, dismantling the bridge and replacing the irreparably damaged portions with new heat-treated metal. After a week of hard work, the bridge was completed. Before Jetfire could leave for his next job, he and Optimus were met by several residents from the nearby complex, who insisted on thanking the two for fixing the bridge and continuing to allow them to visit the Alpha Preserve. As the others made their way to the park, Optimus turned to thank Jetfire as well, but he was already gone. The two friends remained in touch for many years, occasionally running into one another at construction sites and scientific events, with the bridge standing strong for many years to come.

However, the Golden Age was brought to an end with the start of Megatron's revolution, and the planet was plunged into civil war. At one point, Optimus learned of a skirmish near the Benevolous Bridge. Rushing to the scene, Optimus found the combatants already gone, but a massive hole from a weapon blast left in the bridge's walkway. As Optimus approached, he was met by the arrival of Jetfire, now wearing the insignia of the Decepticons. Holding his hands open to show he meant no harm, Optimus declared the bridge could be repaired using the sheet metal from the walls of a nearby toolshed. Jetfire said nothing, but began smoothing out the jagged edges of the hole as Optimus flattened out the walls into metal sheets, and the two welded them to patch the hole. Their work complete, Optimus promised Jetfire that no matter their differences, he still thought of the other bot as a friend, and Jetfire responded in the affirmative before taking off once more. Optimus then walked across the bridge, pleased to find that the Alpha Preserve was still fully intact, untouched by the surrounding destruction.

Optimus notes that he's not sure what happened to Jetfire after that, as he and the Autobots were forced to abandon the planet and come to Earth not long thereafter, but he remains confident that his old friend is fine, and expresses hope that he will once day change his mind about being a Decepticon, much like he did about replacing the bridge. As he thinks back to that time, Optimus vividly recalls all the details of the Alpha Preserve, including its metallic flowers and its strange, abstractly-shaped statues with moving parts that would shift in the wind. He fondly reminisces on the many nights he spent sitting in the park, illuminated by the starlight reflected in the gardens' metal, and the feeling of inner peace it brought him. He muses that memories are not unlike a bridge as well, connecting us with our pasts. For now, though, he thanks you for listening and... (yawn) ...suggests that you both... get a good... night's sleep...

  • Optimus is noted to have been a data clerk at the Hall of Records in his pre-war days, similar to his Aligned counterpart, though no mention is made of his Orion Pax identity.
  • While the Benevolous Bridge has never been mentioned in Transformers fiction, the Alpha Preserve made its first (and previously only) appearance in issue 3 of Dreamwave's Transformers: Generation One V3, a story which coincidentally also placed heavy focus on Jetfire.
  • The story references Jetfire's scientific background and his brief time as a member of the Decepticons, recurring elements of the character dating back to his earliest appearances in media.
