The Chic Chips line of microchips was put on the market some time before the war. Its products were the fashion fad of their day. Being a fad, it was a matter of time before interest would wane, but in Chic Chips' case, this downturn was hastened by Optimus Prime's public disapproval of such vain and frivolous accessories. 2005 IDW continuity

Chic Chips were invented by Needlenose before the war, and sold through a business partnership with Tracks. Though Needlenose's intention was that the chips be designed for everyone, Tracks marketed and priced the devices solely towards the higher classes. This eventually led to a falling out between the pair, and subsequently the end of the business. Once the war was over, Needlenose told his fellow Decepticons he kind of missed those days... only to later remember the bad experiences he had had with Tracks which in turn led him to crush a handful of the chips.
