Megatron has enough problems with one Starscream and yet he makes more!

The clone synthesizer is a Decepticon device with the ability to create clones of Transformers.

The clone synthesizer was installed in the Decepticon's temporary base as they tried to lure the Autobots into a crevasse filled with korlonium crystals. Megatron had Laserbeak take scans of Optimus Prime. He used the scans along with the clone synthesizer to create a remote-piloted Optimus Prime clone that was so convincing that Teletraan I couldn't distinguish it from the real Optimus. To further convince the Autobots of the clone's authenticity, Megatron used the machine to clone Starscream as well, in order to provide a convincing "victim" for the fake Prime. After the failure of the plan, the Decepticons fled in their rocket, taking the clone synthesizer with them. A Prime Problem

Using a clone synthesizer, Megatron created an evil duplicate of Hot Rod known as Dark Hot Rod. This doppelgänger believed himself to be the one true Hot Rod and began a campaign to destroy the original and seize the Matrix of Leadership from Optimus Prime. In a confrontation with Hot Rod in a crystal-lined cave, a burst of energy finally made Dark Hot Rod aware of the truth. Accepting that he was a copy, and to atone for his crimes, he joined the Autobots.

Hot Rod had an encounter with the clone synthesizer at some point before 2010; though not detailed, this was presumably the event that led to the creation of his black clone Dark Hot Rod. Then, in 2010, after Hot Rod had become Rodimus Prime, Starscream's ghost used the clone synthesizer to provide a body for Rodimus's dark thoughts, creating Black Rodimus Convoy.
