The Darkstar is an Autobot starship from the Marvel Generation 2 portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Given it was the '90s, its a safe bet this ship is "gritty and x-treme".

The Darkstar is a shuttlecraft of the Autobots.

Optimus Prime and several others were aboard the Darkstar, discussing the recent discovery of a large amount of "little Cybertrons", when they were attacked by the Cybertronians. As its crew, the Darkstar was brought aboard the Twilight, where its damages were apparently repaired. This was very fortunate when the Autobots made their escape.

Wow, even in space Autobots do a lousy parking job.

Though he could easily recapture the ship, Jhiaxus opted to let the Darkstar go and be followed by one of the Cybertronians' pursuit crafts to Autobase in order to destroy them all at once. War Without End!

The enemy ship was discovered at some point and in an attempt to get rid of it, Optimus Prime had the Darkstar flown into the K'tord Nebula. That area had a reputation of making ships disappear, so it was hoped the Cybertronians would therefore be discouraged from further pursuit. The plan backfired horrendously: the Cybertronians did not back off and both them and the Autobots were all infected with a rage-feeding and -inducing disease that was the cause of the area's reputation. Only Hound was spared this fate, who ended up alone aboard the vessel. Believing he was doomed, he programmed the ship with a message of the events that had transpired and a warning for others to stay away.

However, Optimus Prime and Jhiaxus were able to overcome the disease and save the others, after which Hound came back with the Darkstar to pick up the Autobots during a short-lived truce. Primal Fear!
