When the team is sent to evacuate a colony of rare Yellow-eyed penguins from an island, an approaching electrical storm affects the Trainees' abilities and they discover the only tool they have left is their brains.
Synopsis
[edit]As an electrical storm bears down on a tropical island, the recruits are hastily evacuating the island's penguin population onto the Sigma. Hot Shot believes they've finished, until Medix points out a pair of penguins which he and Hoist have to round up. They contact Whirl and Wedge who are doing a last minute sweep and call them back. The pair have found a last couple of penguins who are reluctant to go with them. Meanwhile the penguins aboard the Sigma are causing havoc and damaging the controls. Boulder decides to deliver the penguins to the prepared habitat while the recruits stay on the island to retrieve the last penguins.
Whirl and Wedge have been delayed as the penguins keep escaping. The other recruits catch up with them, and the penguins are safely stored in Medix's vehicle mode for the rest of the trip to the beach. Unfortunately once there, they receive a message from Boulder that the Sigma is unable to fly due to the storm. Hot Shot figures he and Whirl can just fly the penguins to safely, but the five recruits are hit by a lightning strike, and quickly find that their tools and ability to transform have been temporarily disabled. Whirl comes up with a plan to build a raft after recalling a movie she's seen, and the recruits set about collecting materials so they can do so.
Once their raft is completed, they notice the tide's gone out, which Whirl realizes is the sign a giant wave is imminent, and they also realize the two penguins have vanished. Wedge and Whirl return to the penguin nest, where they discover that the two penguins have three chicks, which is why they kept trying to go back. By imitating penguins, the two recruits lead the family back to the beach. After they launch the raft, some surfing occurs but they manage to escape before the island is submerged.
Back at the academy, Hoist reports to Boulder that the penguins are all safe. Unfortunately the penguins are now causing chaos in the Academy, and Boulder opts to leave the problem to the recruits.

Real-world references
[edit]- Yellow-eyed penguins are unique to New Zealand, suggesting the island the Rescue Bots are visiting is meant to be part of either the Campbell Islands or Auckland Islands, though it seems to be more tropical.
- Whirl gives the penguins names based on famous comedians. Stan and Holly are named for Stan Laurel and Ollie Hardy, while Mary, Curly and Moe are named for the Three Stooges (Larry, Curly and Moe), even sporting matching haircuts.
- Whirl recalls a movie about a human trapped on an island with a volleyball, referencing the 2000 film Cast Away.

Trivia
[edit]- The Sigma has an oddly specific eject function which ejects Boulder from the top of the ship.
