Wheeljack was exiled to Gygax by Optimus Prime. During his banishment, he built the Dinobots with which he hoped to earn his return. The Dinobots did... not perform all that well, and Optimus would've sent Wheeljack right back to Gygax had Side Burn not had the better idea of putting Wheeljack's technical genius on repairing the Ark instead.
